AN APPEAL FOR INFORMATION

A k'ula (კულა)

I was recently (August 2020) contacted by Paul Rodzianko, who is searching for information on the following:

(1) early (pre-1917) postcards by Oskar Schmerling;

(2) pre-1917 photographs or engravings of people drinking from or simply posing with traditional Georgian wine vessels other than piala [clay bowls] or q'ants'i [drinking horns]—e.g. using k'ulas (კულა), maranis (მარანი) or q'arq'aras (ყარყარა) (although pictures featuring bowls or horns would be equally welcome); and

(3) newspaper or other articles relating to [i.] the use of any wine drinking vessels or [ii.] specific traditions, e.g. the awarding of k'ulas to wrestling champions in Tbilisi, one of whom was even nicknamed k'ula because he won so often.
