Published by the "Educational-Pedagogical Sector" of the State Publishing House of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1934, Sergi Mak'alatia's remarkable Khevi (289 pp.) is one of the oldest ethnographic studies of the northern Georgian region of Khevi (Georgian ხევი, "valley, gorge")—a region more commonly but mistakenly called "Kazbegi" after the imposing mountain nearby.
Mak'alatia was a kind of "serial ethnographer" in Georgia in the 1930s, publishing books on Racha (Mtis Rach'a, მთის რაჭა, 1930), Mtiuleti (Mtiuleti, მთიულეთი, 1930), Tusheti (Tusheti, თუშეთი, 1933), Pshavi (Pshavi, ფშავი, 1934), Khevsureti (Khevsureti, ხევსურეთი, 1935), Mingrelia (History and Ethnography of Samegrelo, სამეგრელოს ისტორია და ეთნოგრაფია, 1941), and on the mysterious and little-known Ateni Gorge south of Gori (Atenis Kheoba, ათენის ხეობა, 1959).
In almost every one of these books, Mak'alatia includes population tables and figures taken from the most recent census at his disposal at the time of writing (presumably). Here are the ones for Khevi, which he has divided into two communities (G. თემი, temi)—Q'azbegi (25 villages), and K'obi (28):

The clear Georgian/Ossetian segregation these figures indicate seems simply incredible, and casts an awful shadow over the tables' overall reliability; surely it is impossible to believe that the two communities were so isolated from each other! The data of the 1926 census Mak'alatia is apparently reproducing states that barely 87 (1.56%) of Q'azbegi temi's 5,600 inhabitants were not Georgian, and that only 14 (0.45%) of K'obi temi's 3,127 inhabitants were not Ossetian; if these figures are to be believed, the 25 villages of Q'azbegi temi were 98.44% Georgian, and the 28 of K'obi temi were 99.55% Ossetian.
But however unreliable the data, they can nonetheless be "crunched" into revealing other interesting—if tentative—figures:

The last two graphs illustrate another very interesting difference between the 28 "Ossetian" villages of K'obi temi and the 25 "Georgian" ones of Q'azbegi temi: Whereas the number of inhabitants in the largest of the "Ossetian" villages barely exceeds 200 (Almasiani, 201; K'obi, 205; and K'etrisi, 214), the Georgian villages of the Q'azbegi temi—despite being smaller on average (4.8 people per household compared to 6.7 in K'obi temi)—tend to be much larger: around 224 people divided into 46.6 households per village (compared to an average of 112 for 16.7).
